Head of SEND

At Oxfordshire County Council, we want every child to get the best possible education. With this goal in mind, we’ve set out to improve and transform our services. While our mission has succeeded in raising levels of attainment, we need to do more for vulnerable pupils – particularly those with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND). This is a priority that requires a skilled and motivated professional. But as Head of SEND, you can be sure that our excellent relationship with schools will make the challenge easier.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a successful school-led approach. In Oxfordshire, there’s a broad mix of school types, ranging from maintained and free schools, to academies and private institutions. However, our provision for SEND students needs prompt, effective attention, to ensure that it complies with strict OFSTED standards.

As Head of SEND, you’ll lead our strategic vision and co-ordinate a joined-up approach. It all starts with a strong post-OFSTED action plan, as well as a High Need block review. Fundamental changes in process will be needed and there’ll be an external consultant to lead a review. But, throughout this journey, you’ll ensure we fulfil the SEND Code of Practice, especially when it comes to ECHPs. At the same time, you’ll manage the High Need block budget as well as services for Psychology, Sensory Need and mainstream support. A central figure in the department, you’ll be equipped to give stakeholders specialist advice.

This is a key role for a confident SEND expert – someone who knows the agenda, the administration, legislation and the SEND Code of Practice. Bringing proven experience in this domain, you’ll know what to aim for – and how to get us there. In addition to technical knowledge, you’ll bring a degree (or equivalent), a management qualification and a gift for strategic delivery. With the knowledge to champion good practice and the needs of learners, you’ll be an engaging partner for schools and parents right across the region.
